Is mold a problem for you?

Every single person should be concerned about mold, not just because it is everywhere, but also because it can so easily colonize and become a serious problem. It can go from a single spore to a full-fledged colony in only a few months, causing serious problems for your property and posing a serious risk for your health. If you have asthma already, it will increase the rate and number of your attacks. If you don’t have asthma, mold spores can actually give you this chronic illness. For this reason alone, you should be worried about mold.

The best time to address a mold problem is before it actually becomes a serious problem—and the very best time to fix a mold problem is before you even have one. Start by cutting off any sources of damp around your home. If you have leaking pipes, get them sealed. Bring an inspector qualified to look for mold to test your property and determine whether or not you already have a problem, or if there are areas where you can take preventative measures.

Even if you had your house or business inspected before you moved in, you should have it inspected again. Mold grows rapidly and without notice, even if you scrub your house from floor to ceiling every week. It is recommended that you get a mold inspection once every eighteen months, even if you cannot see or smell any mold on your property. Mold often lurks in the areas of the building that are the most difficult to see. A qualified inspector can identify mold where it grows and even help you prevent mold from developing if you have at risk areas.

There is a fairly common misconception that mold only grows in unclean places. Most people believe that if you clean your house, you will not get mold. This simply is not the case. Though an unclean house can exacerbate a mold problem, clean houses are just as likely to develop mold.

There is also the misconception that houses in humid climates are far more likely to get mold that houses in dry climates. The actual climate of the area has very little to do with whether or not a house will get mold. Just as many houses in the high desert will develop mold problems as houses beside the beach.
